Sole-proprietor legal practices covered
The section 4(1)(c) exemption does not apply to an individual who is sole proprietor of a law firm or of a foreign law practice providing any legal services in Singapore. The regulation identifies this specific exemption exclusion; it does not itself grant permission to practise law.
Firms of two or more individuals
The exclusion also applies to a firm of two or more individuals that is a law firm, a foreign law practice providing any legal services in Singapore, or a Joint Law Venture. The provision specifies the form and categories rather than applying indiscriminately to every entity associated with lawyers.
Definitions and commencement
Law firm, foreign law practice and Joint Law Venture take their meanings from section 2(1) of the Legal Profession Act. The regulations commenced on 3 January 2016, replacing the 2009 Business Registration regulations on application to the exercise of a profession, S 185/2009. They were made on 21 December and published on 31 December 2015 as S 828/2015.
